KD85XH8096BU Unable to change Aspect ratio , screen menus greyed out

Hello I have a 2020 Sony 85 inch KD85XH8096BU , and on any input, TV, streaming or blu ray input the screen menu shows locked in 4:3 , when playing modern blu rays or UHD DISCS I do display in 16:9 ok but with older films that are filmed in 4:3 I would like to stretch the image to remove left and right black bars, but I’m not able to do this as the wide menu, screen menu etc are all unavailable. Anyone know how to resolve this annoying feature? I understand that distortion and picture detail on the upper part or lower part of the image maybe lost but I would like the choice all the same. This is normal on Sony TVs. The aspect ratio settings can't be changed on all sources. It depends on the source you're watching really.

Hi there thank you for the reply, well this is interesting I spent 30 minutes on the phone today with Sony who seem blissfully unaware of that, can you suggest under what circumstances this menu would be able to be manipulated please?

I have a Sony engineer arriving tomorrow to also try and resolve this conundrum so that’ll be interesting!

I'm not sure exactly, I think it's something to do with the signal format. Can you adjust the ratio from the player settings?

Hi guys

So the technical support guys from Sony support determined that this needed further investigation. As a consequence they arranged under warranty for a Sony technician to visit my home today to take a further look at the problem. He arrived earlier today and has confirmed that the screen menu under the display menus is greyed out and regardless of the input to the tv the menu remains greyed out which isn’t correct. The root cause is either a software issue and/or a main psb fault but the latter is an unlikely cause. He is reverting to Sony directly to determine best next steps and will advise ASAP but he did say if there are many Sony customers that all suffer similar issues it is more likely that Sony may address the issue more urgently, so has anyone else raised the issue with Sony ?

I have the same problem, you cannot change the aspect ratio as it is been grayed out no matter what, my TV is KD75XH7505

Yes I am suffering the same problem, my dealer changed the main board though I’m not sure why , still the same problem, Sony needs to fix this

Hey, alish- do you have the same exact issue as the original poster? Aren't you able to change the aspect ratio on any source? Also, what's the software version on your TV? Press the Help button to get it. Another thing, are you sure about the model??

Hi and yes same for us on our XH9505 - all greyed out on HDMI 1 so we cannot adjust to expert advised settings - all very annoying. Tried Ariel input and some but not all greyed out.

Hope we can get them to fix this and thanks for raising it.

Hi 2939andy, this is the normal case anyway on Sony TVs I'm afraid, the aspect ratio doesn't work on all inputs.

Hi I seem to have found a way to sort this. On my XH9505 there is Quick Settings when watching a programme. It comes up along the bottom of the screen. Scrolling along to Edit brought up more Quick Set options including Screen Adjustments. I ticked it. Low and behold it allowed me to change the whole range of viewing angles from Full to Wide to Zoom...on both the recorded programme I was watching on HDMI 1 and a live programme.

Can't be that simple can it ?

Hey @sttucke32,

The Quick Settings should be available on all Sony TVs AFAIK.

Have you tried pressing the Options button (has the same icon as the Settings)?

Hi I’ve just had a Sony KD55x85L and I to I’m also have the same thing as you with the aspect ratio and have to been in touch with Sony and also have been told that a should be able change the aspect but its not possible so it is still on at the moment.

Not sure if you guys are still looking for an answer but I’ve managed to get the controls usable

I’m using a virgin box on hdmi3 so need to change the settings in the box to broadcast 1080i then go to tv settings and you can now change aspect ratio

It all depends on what ever input/ device your using and what it’s broadcasting in

4k and hd Sony won’t let you change aspect ratio anything below and they will
